Men's Golf Takes Eighth at Raleigh Regional

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Mercer men's golf team completed its 2013-14 season on Saturday at Lonnie Poole Golf Course with an eighth place finish at the NCAA Raleigh Regional. Mercer's final round 293 brought the team's three-day total to 870 and left the team's 10 strokes outside of qualifying for the NCAA Championship.
Georgia Tech won the regional with a three-round total of 825, while Washington (842), Texas A&M (849), Kentucky (856) and Florida State (860) joined the Yellow Jackets in advancing to the next stage of postseason play.
Mercer's final round 293 came in conjunction with scores of 291 and 286 in the first two rounds to slot the Bears one stroke behind Wake Forest and two strokes ahead of Minnesota.
Junior Trey Rule highlighted Mercer's showing, tying for ninth place individually at 212. Rule's Saturday 1-under 70 followed a pair of 71's in the first two rounds. The placement marked the fifth time Rule took a top-10 spot in 2013-14.
Senior James Beale carded a 3-over 74 on Saturday to complete the event in a tie for 25th place. Beale's tournament total of 216 included scores of 73 and 69 in the first two rounds.
Senior Hans Reimers was one stoke behind Beale, finishing in a tie for 29th place overall. Reimers opened with back-to-back 72's before using 73 strokes in the final round.
Freshman Emmanuel Kountakis tied for 63rd at 226 with rounds of 75, 74 and 77. His classmate Sean Smothers took 73rd at 232 with an 80 and two 76's.
