
Men's Golf Finishes 12th at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Mercer University men's golf team fired a final round score of 296 to take home a 12th-place finish at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Sunday morning at the UNC Finley Course.
The Bears recorded a team total of 876 in the three-day event, after carding scores of 287 and 293 on the first two rounds of play. North Carolina took home the team title, while UNC-Greensboro and East Carolina tied for second place.
"We struggled a bit today, but showed we can compete with the top teams in the Southern Conference," said Kayden. "The team came in well prepared, just had a few course management errors that we can easily correct going into the next tournament."
Sophomore Emmanuel Kountakis and freshman Jerry Ren ended the tournament in a tie for 23rd place to lead Mercer. Kountakis shot back-to-back 70's to open the weekend, before ending with a 77 for a three-round total of 217. Ren wrapped up his first collegiate event with a team-best score of 71 on Sunday, finishing one-over for the tournament to match Kountakis.
Senior Trey Rule carded a 72 on the final day of play to finish 32nd overall with a total score of 218, while Sean Smothers rounded out the scoring for the Bears with Sunday's total of 76. Jeffrey Heinicka, Jr. posted a 79 in the closing round to finish one stroke ahead of Smothers for the tournament with a score of 227. Evan Usry, who competed as an individual, signed for an 18-hole total of 75 today en route to a final score of 235.
Mercer moves on the second tournament of its five-event fall schedule, as it travels to Toledo, Ohio for the Inverness Intercollegiate at the Inverness Country Club on September 22-23.
