MERCER SPOTLIGHT
Ren rebounded from a 6-over-par opening round and will take on the final two holes of the second round with an even-par 65 through 16 holes. The sophomore tallied five birdies on the day, while posting an even-par average on par-3 holes.
THE BEARS IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
Mercer carded a score of 308 on the day's opening round, but improved on the second round, which will wrap up Tuesday morning. The Bears head into the final 18 holes within striking distance of a Top-5 finish, as they are currently eight strokes away from that effort. Memphis tops the leaderboard, while Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State round out the top three.
COACH KAYDEN'S TAKE
"Our guys fought hard today. We still have three guys who need to finish two holes after having to close the day early due to darkness. The greens are really fast, which has made play slow but I think we can play well tomorrow and finish strong. Jerry played well in the second round to help give us some momentum for tomorrow, as did Justin and Jeff despite the difficulty of the course."
MERCER NOTABLES
- Mercer has 18 birdies so far in the tournament, led by a team-best six birdies from Hanzelko. Ren had five on the day, while Smothers added four.
- The Bears were at their best on par-5 holes, shooting a combined 1-under with a 4.98 stroke average.
- Hanzelko and Heinicka posted the team's top scores in the first round of play, carding scores of 74 and 75 respectively.
COMING UP
The Bears wrap up the Pinetree Intercollegiate tomorrow morning, as they finish the second round with an 8 a.m. tee time.
