MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis team finished the non-conference slate of its season with a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern on Tuesday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
Mercer played its third match in five days, including two non-conference opponents. As with No. 60 Alabama on Sunday, the Bears won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
Arsav Mohanty won his singles match (6-1, 6-3) at flight four to give the Mercer a 2-0 lead, before Georgia Southern took two straight matches to knot the score at 2-2. Anderson Scarpa won 6-4, 6-4 at the number three spot before Arnav Mohanty fell 7-5, 6-3 at flight one to tie the score again, 3-3.
Sam Philp played the only three-set match of the day, dropping his first set, 3-6, and winning the second, 6-3, to force a third, which he won, 6-4, to clinch the win for the Orange and Black.
"This was a good win for our team today," said Head Coach Eric Hayes. "As a team, the players must keep developing a killer instinct mentality. When you get a team down, you must finish; and that's what we did today."
Mercer will continue Southern Conference play on Saturday, March 28 at Wofford at 2:00 p.m.
