Men's Tennis Edged by Wofford in SoCon Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The third-seeded Mercer men's tennis team fell to No. 6 Wofford, 4-3, in the Southern Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Friday at the Reeves Tennis Center.
Mercer finished the season with a 12-13 mark.
"Today's match had nothing to do with the crowd or the atmosphere," said Head Coach Eric Hayes. "We simply played not to lose instead of playing to win. It is inexcusable to win five of six first sets in singles and be up a set serving at 5-4 in two matches and not win. We simply did not step up today."
The Bears took a 2-0 lead after winning the doubles point and Anderson Scarpa's 6-2, 6-4 win at flight four.
The Terriers tied the match, 2-2, with wins at flights one and six, before SoCon Freshman of the Year, Sam Philp, defeated Walker Heffron in three sets to put Mercer back up, 3-2.
Wofford won the final two sets to take the match after forcing a third set in both matches.
