
Women's Soccer Picks Up 2-1 Win Over Charlotte

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University women's soccer team defeated Charlotte, 2-1, on Friday night at Bear Field to open the home portion of the schedule with a victory.
TURNING POINT
After battling back and forth for much of the first half, Mercer took a 1-0 lead when Valeria Bermeo found Jamilah Tejan with a cross and Tejan finished to the right side of the net. The Bears put the game away with a second goal from Tejan after the fired the ball in the net from 15 yards out following a corner kick in the 51st minute. Charlotte scored on a penalty kick in the 66th minute and Mercer kept the 49ers from knotting the score in the final 24 minutes.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Junior Jamilah Tejan scored both of Mercer's goals, not only recording the first goals of the season for the Bears but the first of her career. Tejan led Mercer with three shots and three shots on goal.
STAT OF THE GAME
Despite Charlotte leading the shot count, 19-11, Mercer notched a higher shots on goal percentage, with the Bears putting 45 percent of its shots on target.
NOTABLES
- Cristina Mursuli came in for the Bears in the second half and made a season-high five saves.
- Jamilah Tejan led Mercer with three shots and two goals, while Haleigh Svede also tallied three shots, including two on goal.
- Tejan's goals were the first (and second) of her career for the Orange and Black.
- Valeria Bermeo's assist was the first of the season for the sophomore and the second of her career.
- Maggie Cropp played for nearly 62 minutes in goal, recording one save.
- As a team, Charlotte outshot Mercer, 19-11, and controlled the corner kick count, 4-2. However, the 49ers only goal came from a penalty kick in the 66th minute.
