
Women's Soccer Opens SoCon Play with 3-0 Win Over The Citadel

MACON, GA. – The Mercer University women's soccer team opened league action with a dominating 3-0 win over The Citadel on Saturday afternoon at Bear Field.
TURNING POINT
After a slow start, Maddie Clark put the Bears on the board in the 31st minute when she scored off a cross from Katelyn Dimopoulos. Mercer added a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second half to secure the victory.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Maddie Clark scored a pair of goals for Mercer, one in the 31st minute and one in the 46th, to register the game-winning goal as well as provide the Bears with some breathing room early in the second half.
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer led in shots, 30-3, as well as shots on goal, 12-3.
NOTABLES
- Maddie Clark scored her first game-winning goal of the season. She also led the Bears with five shots, including three on goal.
- Katelyn Dimopoulos scored off a penalty kick in the 50th minute to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. She also registered Mercer's only assist on the night.
- Sarah Daane was second for the Bears with four shots, while Valeria Bermeo, Katelyyn Dimopoulos, Haleigh Svede and Jamilah Tejan were tied with three shots.
- Cristina Mursuli made the lone save of the night for the Bears, as the Mercer defense registered its third shutout of the season.
- Mercer also led in corner kicks, 10-2.

"It's always great to get the first win of the conference season. We challenged the team today, against a very tough and organized Citadel team, and it was a very tough first half for us. We didn't stick to our game plan and we were a little sluggish, but we talked at halftime and adjusted our game plan and we came out with a much better effort and performance in the second half." – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer improved to 4-4-2 (1-0 SoCon) on the season, while The Citadel fell to 1-10 (0-1 SoCon).
