Women's Tennis Defeats Florida Atlantic in Season Opener

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University women's tennis team opened the season with a 4-2 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday afternoon.
"We got a good result today in very tough weather conditions," said Head Coach Eric Hayes. "FAU beat us pretty easily last year. After doubles we got down in singles, but we found a way to win. Grace (Korta) did a great job coming back in her match."
Mercer took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point to open the match. Katie Sidor's singles win at flight four gave the Bears a 2-0 lead, but FAU won the match at the number six spot to make it 2-1. Katia Stravroulaki forced a third set at flight one and put Mercer up 3-1 overall, but another singles point for the Owls kept it close, 3-2.
Grace Korta battled back from being down 2-5, 15-40 in the third set of her singles match to defeat Marisa Ruiz and clinch the match for the Bears.
Next up, Mercer will face No. 24 Georgia Tech on January 31 in Atlanta, Ga.
