Mercer Suffers First Home Loss to Chattanooga
10/1/2016 5:28:00 PM | Volleyball
MACON, Ga. – Less than 24 hours after winning a lengthy five-set match on its home court, the Mercer volleyball team was silenced with a 3-0 (15-25, 22-25, 17-25) defeat at the hands of visiting Chattanooga on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Hawkins Arena.
Â
The Southern Conference loss was Mercer's (10-6, 2-2 SoCon) first at Hawkins Arena this season while the Mocs won their second league match in as many days to improve to 9-7 (2-1).
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Very little stopped the Mocs offensively as they hit an impressive .411 for the match, including .448 in the opening set to win 25-15. The early hole proved difficult for Mercer to climb out of despite hitting a respectable .279 for the match.
Â
Trailing 1-0 overall, Mercer jumped out to 7-3 advantage in the second set and was tied with the Mocs as late as 22-22, but couldn't hold on. The Mocs finished the set with three final points, overshadowing a quality offensive set by the Bears that included 18 kills. After a three-point run pulled Mercer within one, 15-14, in the third set, Chattanooga closed the door on the match with 10 of the final 13 points to win 25-17.
Â
NOTABLES
While the Mercer student population enjoys its university fall break next weekend, the Bears will hit the road for Birmingham, Alabama to take on Samford. The match will be on Friday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. (ET) at the Pete Hanna Center.
