Mercer Defeated in Straight Sets by Chattanooga
10/22/2016 10:58:00 PM | Volleyball
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Mercer's two-match road trip to the state of Tennessee ended as sourly as it started on Saturday afternoon as the Bears were defeated in straight sets, 3-0 (24-26, 16-25, 22-25), by Chattanooga at Maclellan Gym.
Â
Mercer (12-10, 4-6 Southern Conference) was also defeated in straight sets Friday at ETSU, making it two straight losses for the Bears after they had jumped back to .500 in conference play only a week ago. The Mocs improved to 13-10 overall and 6-4 in the SoCon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (24-26) | The Bears had a 17-12 lead more than halfway through the opening set, but a late Chattanooga rally would set the tone for the rest of the match. The Mocs crawled back into it with runs of three, four and three before finally finishing it off by capitalizing on a pair of errors by Mercer.
Â
Set 2 (16-25) | Mercer kept the second set tight up until Chattanooga pulled away with nine of 12 points mid-way through the frame to jump out to an 18-11 lead that proved insurmountable. Morgan MacGilvary totaled three kills and an ace in the set.
Â
Set 3 (22-25) | After Mercer locked the third and final set at 19-19 with a kill from Paige Alsten, Chattanooga would close out the match with five of the next eight points to seal it. The Bears had eight different leads throughout the frame but just couldn't string together enough momentum to break away from the Mocs on their home court.
Â
NOTABLES
Mercer gets a week off from competition before hosting Samford (RECORD) at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Hawkins Arena, where the Bears are 6-1 this season. The Bulldogs defeated Mercer 3-1 in Birmingham, Alabama on Oct. 7.
