Men's Tennis Falls to Winthrop

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University men's tennis dropped a close match to Winthrop. 4-3, on Sunday afternoon.
"Close is not good enough," said Head Coach Eric Hayes. "We just could not find the fourth point at the end and they did. I am convinced something special will happen during the conference schedule, but everyone must man up and finish."
Winthrop took a 1-0 lead in the match after winning the doubles point and made it a 2-0 lead after a win at flight one in singles. Anderson Scarpa won his match 7-5, 6-3, to put the Bears on the board, 2-1. Sam Philp followed Scarpa with a win, 7-6, 7-5, to tie the match, 2-2.
With a Winthrop win on court six and Arsav Mohanty's 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, win at flight five, the match was once again tied, 3-3. Arnav Mohanty fell in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, as Winthrop clinched the match.
Last season, Winthrop won the Big South Conference and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Next up, Mercer will face Kennesaw State on Wednesday, March 2 at 1:00 p.m. in Kennesaw. The match was rescheduled from its original date due to inclement weather.
