TROY, Ala. – The Mercer University softball team returns to Macon on a sour note as it was defeated 4-1 by Troy in the finale of the Trojan Warrior Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 28.
FINAL – Troy 4, Mercer 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears scored a then-game-tying run in the top of the sixth inning as Natalie Shiver drove in Taylor Miller on a single through the right side, but it wasn't enough as Troy scored the game-winning runs the following half frame. Hannah Day hit a three-run home run for the Trojans off of Anna O'Neill, who was pitching in relief of Maxine Rodriguez.
Mercer compiled seven total hits in the game but left five runners on base and was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Taylor Miller did a little bit of everything for the Mercer offense against Troy on Sunday. The junior right fielder was 2-for-3 at the plate while scoring the Bears' only run and adding a stolen base as well. She was the only Mercer player with multiple hits, both of which were singles.
NOTABLES
- Taylor Miller's 2-for-3 hitting performance resulted in her hitting safely in all five of Mercer's games in the Trojan Warrior Tournament this weekend. The five-game hitting streak includes six total hits and helped improve her batting average from .290 to .326.
- Natalie Shiver recorded a RBI in three of the Bears' five games in the Trojan Warrior Tournament, including the lone run batted in on Sunday against Troy. Shiver doubled her RBI total over the weekend as she returns to Macon with six for the season.
- With seven hits in the tournament, including one on Sunday, Megan Lane continues to lead the Bears with a .372 batting average and 16 hits as a freshman.
- Maxine Rodriguez had another solid start in the circle for the Bears, surrendering only three runs on six hits while striking out one batter. All three runs were via the long ball and she held the Trojans hitless in two of her five innings pitched.
- Sunday's loss was Mercer's fifth game this season without an error in the field.
- Mercer was held to less than two runs for the fourth time this season. The Bears are 0-7 when scoring two or fewer runs this season.
