Mercer Men's Tennis Wins SoCon Opener Over Wofford, 5-2
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University men's tennis team defeated Wofford by a final score of 5-2 in its Southern Conference opener on Saturday afternoon. The Bears have now won two straight conference-opening matches.
"It was good to start conference play with a win," Mercer head coach Eric Hayes said. "I thought we maintained intensity all the way through the match. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the country has made us ready for conference matches."
The Bears got off to a strong start, winning the doubles point. The Bears' No. 2 and 3 teams recorded wins before the No. 1 team could finish to secure the point. The No. 2 pairing of Arsav Mohanty and Ruben Vanoppen won easily by a score of 6-2 and the No. 3 duo of Fernando Guardia and Nicolas Guillon defeated the Terriers by a final of 6-3.
The Orange and Black won each of the first three matches to finish in singles action to cement the victory early. Guillon made quick work at the No. 2 position, winning 6-1, 6-3. He was followed by Arsav Mohanty at No. 5 singles, who claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win. Anderson Scarpa earned the match-clinching point at the No. 4 position, recording a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over his counterpart. The fifth and final Mercer win of the day came from Guardia at No. 6 singles, posting a straight-set 7-6, 6-1 win to put an exclamation mark on the day.
Next up, Mercer has over a week before its back in action, as it welcomes Florida A&M to Macon on Monday, March 21 at 2:30 p.m.
