BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mercer University women's tennis fought hard against the Southern Conference defending champions, Samford, but ultimately fell 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
"We totally left three points out there today that could have made a difference in this match," said Head Coach Eric Hayes. "There is an incredible difference between last year's team and this year's team and it will begin to show in our results."
Roxy Bartz and Xandra Fougner won the first doubles match, but Samford overcame at flights one and three to take the doubles point. The Bulldogs clinched the match with five singles wins, but not without a fight from the Bears.
The nearly four-hour match saw four singles matches go to three sets, including Grace Korta at flight three, who rallied for a 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 win for Mercer's only point of the day. Three Mercer players rallied from a first set loss to win the second set and force a third in singles play.
Next up, Mercer will host UNCG on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
