
Mercer Men's Golf in Sixth after First Round of SoCon Championship

PINEHURST, N.C. – The Mercer University men's golf team opened the first round of the Southern Conference Championship with a team score of 303 (+15) and are in sixth place with two rounds remaining. The tournament is being played on Pinehurst No. 9, a Jack Nicklaus Signature course.

THE BEARS IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
Mercer's opening round 303 (15-over) placed the team in sixth in the SoCon field. The Bears enter day two of play just eight shots outside of a top five position. ETSU sits atop the leaderboard through the opening 18 holes with a score of 1-under. Furman is in second (2-over) and Wofford is third (3-over). The Bears lead both Western Carolina (18-over) and Samford (25-over).
MERCER SPOTLIGHT
Bogdanovich was steady throughout his Sunday morning round, as the freshman posted the Bears' best performance of the day with an even-par 72. The Suwanee, Ga., native is tied for seventh place in the individual rankings of the championship. Bogdanovich carded three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars over the 18 holes and recorded a score of 37 on the front nine and a 35 after making the turn.

"The guys played hard today and we were very close to a solid score. Brennan had a solid day to lead us. I am very encouraged by his performance. Sean was much improved today and was very good with the putter. We just need to stay focused and take one day at a time to keep improving."
MERCER NOTABLES
- The Bears totaled 13 birdies on Sunday, with Bogdanovich, Ren and Smothers leading the way with three each.
- Mercer thrived on the par fives, posting a cumulative score of 2-under on the holes, ranking third as a team in the category.
- Smothers is tied for second for par five scoring, shooting a 3-under on the opening day.
