Mercer Powers Past FDU for Third Straight Win

MACON, Ga. – Another match, another season-high hitting percentage. That's what the Mercer volleyball team did Friday afternoon in its 3-1 (25-16, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21) victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in the Mercer Invite at Hawkins Arena. Mercer hit a collective .367, setting a team season-high for the third straight match and improved to 6-4 in the process.
HOW IT HAPPENED
An utterly dominant first set win, 25-16, sparked the Bears' charge from the beginning. Mercer hit .457 en route to totaling 17 kills on 35 total attacks. The offensive surge continued into the second set as the Bears put Fairleigh Dickinson away late for the 25-19 win. Tied 18-18, a key kill by Danielle Faust vaulted Mercer to their final six points.
A back-and-forth third set ended in a 25-21 win for the Knights as Mercer committed six errors in the process. The Bears righted the ship though, hitting .333 for 14 kills in the fourth and final set to win 25-21 and 3-1 overall.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Paige Alsten was nearly unstoppable in the middle for Mercer on Friday afternoon. The sophomore middle blocker recorded a season-high in kills (13) while totaling a match-high six blocks. She hit .600 in the match, raising her SoCon-leading hitting percentage to .387.
NOTABLES
- Mercer outgained Fairleigh Dickinson in nearly every category, totaling 11.0 blocks, 62 digs, 60 assists, 67 kills and the .367 hitting percentage.
- Four Bears recorded double-digit kills, led by Emily Krogman's season-high 17. Alsten, Morgan MacGilvary and Danielle Faust added 13 each.
- More impressively, three Bears – Alsten, Faust and MacGilvary – hit at least .500 with a minimum of 20 total attacks.
- Faust had a career day on the court. Her .619 killing percentage led the team while she set a career-high in kills (13). The sophomore added one dig and one block.
- Krogman led Mercer with 39 total attacks and posted a match-high 17 kills. She hit .385 in the process and added nine digs, barely missing a double-double.
- The setting duo of Hannah Noon and Claire Waliczek was firing on all cylinders, recording a combined 53 assists led by Noon's season-high 31.
- Tori Penrod paced the Mercer with 21 digs. She's reached at least 20 digs four times this season.

Day one of the Mercer Invite will conclude with Mercer and Towson squaring off at 7 p.m. at Hawkins Arena. The Tigers defeated USC Upstate 3-2 at noon and own a tournament best 10-1 record.
