Five-Set Loss to Wofford Snaps Mercer’s Streak
9/24/2016 9:09:00 PM | Volleyball
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A back-and-forth Southern Conference volleyball match went against Mercer on Saturday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena as Wofford defeated the Bears 3-2 (20-25, 33-31, 19-25, 26-24, 8-15) in five sets.
The loss snaps a six-game win streak for Mercer (9-5, 1-1 SoCon) and gave the Terriers (8-8, 1-1 SoCon) their first league victory of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite playing nearly mistake-free volleyball in the opening set in Spartanburg, Mercer failed to get ahead and fell 25-20 to Wofford. The Bears hit .312 with only two attack errors in the set but never led as Wofford did enough offensively to keep Mercer at bay. A kill by Morgan MacGilvary tied the set 18-18 but the Terriers would go on to take seven of the last nine points, including the final four.
Momentum swung into the Bears' favor in the second set as they pulled out a 33-31 victory to even it up 1-1. The thrilling set featured 19 ties and eight lead changes before Mercer finished it out with three straight points. Trailing 32-31, Ellie James, Hannah Noon and Gabbi Meyering all logged kills to break through for the set win.
Mercer led by as many as six points, 13-7, in the third set before Wofford turned things around with a pivotal 25-19 victory that put the Terriers ahead 2-1 overall. A kill by Heather Swann followed by a bad set from Wofford's Lorissa King gave the Bears the 13-7 lead, but the Terriers would win seven of the next eight points and six of the final eight to claim the frame.
The fourth set featured five lead changes, further proving to fit the mold of the evenly-played match. Mercer trailed 23-21 late before Swann recorded her ninth kill of the match, only to be followed by a set-tying ace by Tori Penrod. Wofford would take the next point, but two kills from MacGilvary and an attack error by the Terriers sealed Mercer's 26-24 win.
With a change to improve to 2-0 in conference play, Mercer went cold in the fifth set, recording only two kills with a -.077 hitting percentage to lose the set 15-8 and the match 3-2. Wofford struck the ball well in the final moments, hitting .350 and jumped out to an 8-4 lead that the Bears couldn't overcome.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Emily Krogman and Morgan MacGilvary totaled 17.5 points apiece for Mercer on Saturday, leading the offense with 16 and 14 kills, respectively. The junior tandem hit .295 and .250 while Krogman added six digs and MacGilvary totaled four total blocks.
