Mercer Falls to Top-Seeded Furman in SoCon Quarterfinals
11/17/2017 5:31:00 PM | Volleyball
Emily Krogman matched season-high 18 kills in 3-1 loss
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Despite a strong opening set performance, eighth-seeded Mercer fell to No. 1 Furman, 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 17-25, 19-25), in the Southern Conference Championship quarterfinals Friday afternoon at the Ramsey Center.
Â
Mercer was eliminated from the tournament in the process, bringing its 2017 season to a conclusion. Furman advanced to the tournament semifinals with the win and will face No. 4 Wofford at 2 p.m. Saturday in Cullowhee.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-18) | Mercer tallied a nine-point run midway through the first set, highlighted by kills from Danielle Faust and Emily Krogman, while Maddie Nunley recorded the Bears' third of four aces. The run gave Mercer a 14-8 advantage that it never surrendered.
Â
A critical stretch of three straight kills by Krogman (two) and Nunley (one) put the Bears within match point, which was finished off by Krogman's seventh kill of the set.
Â
Set 2 (18-25) | Furman jumped out to a 9-3 lead early in the second set, forcing a Mercer timeout. The Bears would respond, however, with a seven-point run that tied the set at 12-12. The Paladins used a pair of aces and a kill by Jamila Johnson to reclaim the lead and didn't look back, keeping Mercer at arm's length the rest of the way. Late kills by Morgan MacGilvary and Krogman pulled Mercer within three points, but it was not enough.
Â
Set 3 (17-25) | A pair of kills by Krogman pushed her into the double-digits, but the Bears struggled early and were forced into a timeout after trailing, 6-10. Both teams would trade blows over the next 20 points until Furman notched three straight on a kill, ace and Mercer attack error to lead 23-16. The Paladins put away the decisive set shortly after.
Â
Set 4 (19-25) | Mercer would claim an early 7-6 lead following kills by Paige Alsten and Krogman off assists by Nunley. However, Furman would prove to get the best of the Bears with five of the final eight points of the set and match, claiming a 25-19 set win and match victory.
Â
NOTABLES
"We brought a lot to this match against Furman today," head coach Derek Schroeder said. "Our focus and determination were better than they have been all year. This experience will be great for our younger players when we starting competing to win championships.
Â
"Danielle Faust and Emily Krogman left it all on the floor. I'm so proud of both of them. Danielle plays with so much heart and Krogman was our vocal leader from start to finish."
