MACON, Ga. – Mercer dropped a pair of matches to No. 11 Auburn on Friday, moving to 1-2 on the season. The Bears hung with the Tigers throughout both matches, showing a lot of fight.

In the first match, Mercer was up 4-2 at No. 1 doubles and 4-1 at No. 2 doubles, but Auburn was able to rally and win both matches to help the Tigers secure the doubles point. In singles play, Haley Powell won her second set against No. 112 Roos van der Zwaan and forced a tie-break third set, which she narrowly lost, 10-6.

The teams played all six singles matches to completion as Mercer lost 7-0 in the first match.

In the second match, Auburn once again took the doubles point and won the first singles match to take a 2-0 lead. Andrea Peteu gave the Bears a boost when she won in straight sets at flight six to make it 2-1 overall. The Tigers were able to win another two singles matches to clinch the second match at 4-1.

The second match was called early, but at the time, Katia Stavroulaki was playing a third set after winning her second set against No. 98 Taylor Russo at flight one. At flight three, Katie Sidor defeated No. 120 Alannah Griffin in the first set and was down in the second set when the match was called.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Andrea Peteu won her match to give Mercer a point in the second match. Peteu made her debut in the lineup for the Bears in the second match, winning her first-ever collegiate match.

The Bears are set for another doubleheader on Sunday, facing Alabama State at 11 a.m. and Savannah State at 4 p.m. The matches will take place at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center in Macon.
