Early Runs Lead Mercer to Sweep
2/26/2017 5:02:00 PM | Baseball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer put up 10 runs over the first two innings, in part thanks to Charlie Madden's three RBI performance and fourth home run of the season, as the Bears posted a 15-6 win over Hartford Sunday to clinch the series sweep.
Madden hit a solo home run in the first inning, drove two runs in off a double in the second inning and scored once more himself in the eighth in a 2-for-3 performance from the plate.
The Bears (7-0) hit two home runs in the game giving the team a total of seven over the three-game series. They had entered the weekend ranked sixth in the nation in home runs. A powerful offensive weekend for the Orange and Black, they hit .367 as a team against Hartford (0-3).
Mercer has started the season 7-0 for just the third time in school history, last doing so in 2014.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Charlie Madden gets the nod in his 2-for-3 performance with three RBIs and two runs scored, including a home run. Also a tip of the cap to Danny Edgeworth for drawing three walks around a 1-for-2 outing at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Edgeworth also hit a home run, his second of the year.
STAT OF THE GAME
For the second consecutive game Mercer scored more runs (15) than it had hits (13).
PITCHERS OF RECORD
- Win: Kevin Coulter (1-0)
- Loss: Connor Lewis (0-1)
- Save: None
"We got out in front early. I was glad to see [pitcher] Kevin Coulter have a good outing this weekend. Hartford has a good baseball team. They are very offensive and that is what we expected. Their arms are really good. They came in here after winning 37 games last year and they are going to compete for their championship. I thought we played well today and were able to win game three."
On Charlie Madden:
"He is a good player. It was smart of the White Sox for drafting him but good for him for coming back. But he is a good player and that is what we need out of Charlie."
