Thomas, Bears Upend #8 ECU in Series Opener

Junior goes 4-for-4 with two home runs in the win
Thomas went 4-for-4 with two home runs and six RBIs as the Bears won their first-ever meeting with the nationally ranked Pirates, who fell to 13-5 on the season. The win was Mercer's seventh in eight games.
Mercer (14-4) rallied from three separate deficits within the game, reaching double-digit runs for the eighth time this season. The series opener featured four ties and five lead changes, three of which were in favor of the Bears.
Robert Broom (2-1) earned the win with 1.2 innings of work. Trailing 7-5 in the top of the seventh, Mercer tied it up on a two-run double by Thomas that scored Alex Hanson and Charlie Madden. The Bears went on to escape bases-loaded jams in the both the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings as Christian Vann, Nick Spear and Broom held the Pirates scoreless over the final three innings of play.
Starting pitcher Ryan Askew received the no-decision after logging five innings. He surrendered 12 hits, but struck out three batters and induced two key double plays to keep the Bears alive.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
JT Thomas was a man among boys Friday afternoon, setting career-highs for hits (4) and home runs (2) while tying a career-high of six RBIs. He reached base in all five plate appearances (4-for-4, HBP). His first home run and seventh-inning double both tied the game at 2-2 and 7-7, respectively, before his final long ball put Mercer ahead for good.
