Mercer Opens SoCon Play with 5-2 Win over ETSU
3/24/2017 9:34:00 PM | Baseball
Strong start by Askew and late home runs power Bears to victory
MACON, Ga. – Mercer opened Southern Conference play with a win as Charlie Madden's two-run home run in the eighth inning helped the Bears power past ETSU, 5-2, Friday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
Ryan Askew was rock solid on the mound over 7.2 innings despite receiving the no-decision while Mercer (20-4, 1-0 SoCon) won its seventh straight game and improved to 13-1 at home. The senior right-hander limited a potent ETSU (11-8, 0-1) lineup to two runs on eight hits while striking out six batters.
Â
After ETSU tied the game, 2-2, on an RBI infield single in the top of the eighth and ended Askew's night, the Bears responded with three runs of their own in the home half. Alex Hanson led off the frame with a single before Madden blasted his 10th home run of the season to left field two at bats later.
Â
Jackson Ware added an insurance run with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, another two at bats later to cap the three-run inning. It was lights out after that as Robert Broom (4-1) fanned a pair in the ninth en route to his fourth win of the season.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
"Big 'Skew" was a workhorse Friday night with 7.2 innings of work against an ETSU lineup that entered the contest averaging 8.2 runs per game. Despite receiving the no-decision, Askew's effort gives the Bears a fresh bullpen heading into the final two games of the series.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Seven. Mercer extended its win streak to seven games, matching an identical season-best streak that opened the 2017 campaign.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"Tip you cap to ETSU tonight; they were in a position to win. We won some big moments late at the plate with Charlie Madden and Jackson Ware to compliment a great start by Ryan Askew on the mound.
Â
"Charlie's home run was huge for us; it's really good to see him performing this well during his senior season. Ware has been great all season in that six- or seven-spot for us as well."
