Mercer Falls to ETSU in Series Finale

Eight-game win streak snapped as Bucs collect 14 hits
MACON, Ga. – Trey Truitt went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI double but Mercer saw its eight-game win streak snapped by ETSU in a 9-2 defeat Sunday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
The Bears dropped to 21-5 (2-1 Southern Conference) after claiming the series with wins in games one and two. ETSU (12-9, 1-2) notched its first league win behind 14 hits and a strong performance by right-hander Blake Smith, who struck out eight over eight innings pitched.
Â
Truitt's RBI double went off the right field wall and cut ETSU's lead 3-0 lead to one run as it scored Ryan Hagan and Matt Meeder, both of whom reached with singles. It was the Bears' brightest moment at the plate all game as they scattered three hits the rest of the way.
Â
Chase Burks (1-1) took the loss on the mound after tossing the first four innings. The Bears' bullpen was impressive over the remaining five frames as six pitchers surrendered only four total hits.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Truitt collected his sixth multi-hit game of the season in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. He stole once, pushing his season total to four in as many attempts.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Five of Mercer's six relievers combined to toss 4.1 innings of three-hit baseball while holding the hot-hitting Bucs scoreless. Josh Knies and Sawyer Gipson-Long notched two strikeouts apiece.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"I thought this was a great weekend for us overall against a tough ETSU team. You've to tip your cap to them today though; I thought their starter Blake Smith was outstanding. That's a good club that will win games this year.
Â
"We're hoping that big hit by Trey [Truitt] will get him going…we need him to be good in order to win this league. He's worked hard and gives us 100 percent at all times. Chase Burks just left a few balls up in the zone today and against a good-hitting ball club, you'll get touched up a bit. The bullpen was great…Andrew Kane threw really well, Josh Knies was outstanding, Carter Varga and Sawyer Gipson Long were good too."
