Hagan knocks in a pair with three-hit performance
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Ryan Hagan went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Robert Broom earned the win for the second straight day as Mercer clinched a Southern Conference series victory with a 5-3 defeat of Furman at Latham Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Â
Hagan's three-hit performance started off with a leadoff home run on the second pitch of the game to give Mercer (23-6, 4-1 SoCon) an early lead en route to clinching its 14th straight weekend series win. The senior added a RBI single in the seventh to score Trey Truitt, who ripped a go-ahead RBI double down the left field line two at bats prior that gave the Bears a 2-1 lead.
Â
A solo home run by JT Thomas in the eighth pushed Mercer's lead to 4-1. Alex Hanson made it a 5-2 game in ninth with a sacrifice fly.
Â
Broom improved to 5-1 on the mound with 3.1 innings of relief after a strong five-inning start by southpaw Austin Cox. Broom struck out five batters and stranded the potential go-ahead runner at third base in the sixth inning after taking over.
Â
Furman threatened again in the eighth and ninth innings, but Broom and Nick Spear limited the damage by allowing only one run each frame. Spear needed only one pitch to force a game-ending fly out and earned his fourth save.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Hagan's fifth multi-hit game of the season was a big one as he knocked in a pair for his second multi-RBI performance. Since conference play started last weekend, Hagan has a hit in all five contests and is batting .473.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Cox, Broom and Spear halted nearly every scoring opportunity Furman had Saturday afternoon as the Paladins left 15 runners on base.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"I thought we had really good performances on the mound today from Austin Cox, Robert Broom and Nick Spear. Those guys did well for us today and proved what they're capable of.
Â
"Ryan Hagan got us off to a good start in the first and had a solid day overall…he's a guy we need to win a championship this year. It was good to get the series win; we need to play well tomorrow on Sunday go for all three [wins]."
