Yellow Jackets sweep the two-game season series
ATLANTA – No. 27 (NCBWA) Mercer saw its season-long 11-game win streak snapped with an 8-5 nonconference loss to Georgia Tech at Russ Chandler Stadium Tuesday night.
Â
A six-run second inning keyed a hot start by the Yellow Jackets (17-18), who are the only team to defeat Mercer (32-7) in the last 13 games. Mercer fell to 0-2 against Georgia Tech this season.
Â
The bats of Ryan Hagan and Alex Hanson got Mercer started with a promising first inning. Hanson's RBI double off the center field wall followed Hagan's leadoff single, making it four straight games that the duo has started with consecutive hits. Charlie Madden followed them up three at bats later with a suicide squeeze bunt, scoring Hanson. However, the 2-0 lead was short-lived as the Yellow Jackets scored eight unanswered runs on 10 hits by the end of the fourth.
Â
Mercer reemerged with a three-run fifth after Trey Truitt (single), Hagan (single) and Hanson (walk) loaded the bases with no outs, giving way to RBI singles by JT Thomas and Danny Edgeworth. It was the last push the Bears were able to muster offensively for the night though.
Â
Andrew Kane, Christian Vann, Robert Broom and Nick Spear combined to limit Georgia Tech to one run over the final 6.1 innings of play while striking out nine batters. Josh Knies took the loss, falling to 2-1.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Ryan Hagan extended his hitting and reached base streaks to six and 12 games with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Both streaks are his best of the season. Hagan added two runs and a walk along with an eye-catching diving play at shortstop early in the contest.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer's No. 1-4 hitters had seven of the team's eight hits Tuesday night. Hagan, Thomas and Edgeworth all had two hits apiece.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"For about eight innings, tonight was a great ball game. We had a few mistakes that we just couldn't overcome. Those mental mistakes gave [Georgia Tech] three or four runs that decided the game. We just came up on the short end tonight."
