Mercer Falls to FGCU in ASUN Tournament Quarterfinals

The Bears lose to FGCU for first time this season
DELAND, Fla. – A thrilling three-set win by Tori Penrod and Emily Krogman was not enough as No. 2-seed Mercer was defeated by FGCU, 4-1, in the ASUN Tournament quarterfinals at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Courts Saturday morning.
The Bears (14-11) fall to the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament, where they will face No. 5 Jacksonville at 3 p.m. Saturday. No. 3 FGCU (14-6) will take on the winner of No. 1 Stetson and No. 4 UNF at 9 a.m. Sunday in the semifinals.
Penrod and Krogman remained undefeated (5-0) in their last five matches of ASUN Tournament action with a 21-15, 22-24, 22-20 three-set win at the No. 1 seed. However, the effort was too little, too late, as FGCU had already claimed the first four matches.
No. 2 and 4 pairings Emma Peel/Sophie Peel and Demi-Shay Watchorn/Madison Kerr went three sets apiece against the Eagles but could not pull out wins. Mercer was defeated in straight sets in the No. 3 and 5 pairings.

PAIR OF THE MATCH
Penrod and Krogman proved worthy of yesterday's All-ASUN Team recognitions, defeating the FGCU No. 1 seed for the third time this season. The duo opened the match with a 21-15 win before claiming a 42-point third set to overcome a two-point loss in the second frame.
