Visiting Eagles use three home runs to pull away in nonconference affair
Â
Charlie Madden went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs, but the Bears trailed by as many as 11 runs as they dropped to 35-8 on the season. Georgia Southern improved to 27-14 with the win and has won three straight in the head-to-head series.
Â
After the Eagles claimed a two-run lead in the opening frame, Madden put Mercer in front with a two-run blast to right-center field, scoring Danny Edgeworth, who plated Ryan Hagan on a RBI single in the previous at bat. Madden's second home run was a three-run shot in the ninth, cutting the Eagles' lead to eight.
Â
Sawyer Gipson-Long (1-1) took the loss as five Mercer pitchers saw action on the mound. Seth Shuman (4-0) earned the win and was backed by an eight-RBI performance from right fielder Jordan Wren (3-for-5, two home runs).
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Madden gets the nod for his two-home run effort, which pushed his season total to 16. It is his second multi-home run game this season; he hit a pair in the series finale against Bradley on March 12.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"Tonight was a tough loss that we'll learn from and use to bounce back quickly tomorrow against these guys at their park. Charlie Madden swung the stick well for us and it is good to see him get back into a groove at the plate.
Â
"We haven't been beat up like this much so it will be interesting to see how we respond tomorrow. Zach Graveno has been good for us all year and we've got some guys out of the bullpen who will be ready to go."
