Hanson, No. 22 Mercer Win in Walk-Off over UNCG
4/29/2017 5:54:00 PM | Baseball
Junior outfielder delivers game-winner on third hit of the day
Â
With runners on first and second with one out, Hanson lined his third hit of the day into the right-center field gap to plate Cornell, who entered as a pinch runner for Alex Crotty after his single that sparked the momentum. Mercer improved to 36-10 (15-2 SoCon) and maintained a multiple-game lead in the conference standings while UNCG dropped to 25-16 (9-5).
Â
The walk-off came after both teams traded blows in the bottom of the eighth and top of the ninth. Danny Edgeworth led off Mercer's half of the eighth with a solo home run, breaking a 4-4 tie. However, UNCG responded with run of its own after a leadoff single and passed ball led to a RBI groundout.
Â
Nick Spear (6-1) earned the win despite throwing only one pitch in the ninth after Austin Cox started the game with 5.2 frames, allowing three earned on seven hits while striking out five. Robert Broom bridged the gap with three innings of two-hit ball before being relieved in the ninth with the game tied.
Â
Mercer jumped ahead early with a 4-1 lead on RBI doubles by JT Thomas, Charlie Madden and Jackson Ware before UNCG responded, forcing the late dramatics in the ninth.

COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"It was important for us to get back on track today after a tiresome handful of road games recently. UNCG is playing really well right now so to beat them was a great win for us.
Â
"Alex Hanson has been consistent since day one and he adds so much to the top of our order. Seeing him come up with the big hit was fun. I also can't say enough about Austin Cox and his effort today; he's probably one of the best Saturday starters in the conference right now."
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Have a day, Alex Hanson. The junior outfielder was already having a solid day offensively before his game-winning single in the ninth, which closed the book on a 3-for-5 performance. Hanson added two runs scored earlier in the game.
