No. 22 Mercer Falls to UNCG in Series Rubber Match
4/30/2017 5:33:00 PM | Baseball
Bears drop their first weekend series since March of last year
Â
Mercer (36-11, 15-3 SoCon) led 2-1 with two outs in the seventh before the Spartans (26-16, 10-5) plated eight runs after Coulter was lifted due to his pitch count (116 pitches). The Bears remain in first place in the conference standings despite UNCG claiming the series victory with the rubber-match win.
Â
Coulter went 6.2 innings, striking out six batters while allowing only two runs on five hits. Nick Spear took the loss after a two-run home run by UNCG leadoff batter Ben Spitznagel gave the visitors a 3-2 advantage.
Â
Alex Hanson, JT Thomas and Trey Truitt all finished with two-hit performances. Truitt and Thomas both connected for RBI singles; Truitt's in the second and Thomas' in the seventh.
Â
The Bears have 12-day layoff before getting back into action at Wofford on Friday, May 12 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"Today was not a great day for our bullpen in the later innings, but you have to tip your cap to a very good hitting team in UNCG. This upcoming 12-day stretch without a game will be good for our club to recharge and prepare for the rest of SoCon play.
Â
"Kevin Coulter was unbelievable for us today. Defensively, we played great, but it was Kevin who led the way. You can't say enough about him and I can't wait for him to get back out there."
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Coulter notched another quality effort on the mound despite taking the no-decision. It was the sophomore's fifth straight start that he has allowed two or less earned runs.
