Mercer’s Late Rally Falls Short in 5-4 Loss at Wofford

Alex Hanson goes 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI doubles
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer scored three runs over the final three innings but came up short of a comeback in a 5-4 series-opening loss to Wofford Friday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.
Â
Wofford (26-25, 11-8 Southern Conference) used three home runs to claim a 5-1 advantage after six innings, giving way to Mercer's fifth loss in six games. The Bears (36-12, 15-4) remain in first place in the SoCon standings and can clinch the regular season title with two wins Sunday.
Â
Ryan Askew (4-1) took the loss, allowing four runs over five innings while Wofford's Adam Scott struck out eight batters over seven frames en route to the victory. Four other Mercer pitchers saw action over the final four innings.
Â
Mercer climbed back with a two-run seventh, keyed by Alex Hanson's second RBI double of the game. Hanson scored pinch runner Conrad Cornell from first base after Ryan Hagan plated Trey Truitt on a sacrifice fly one at bat prior. Jackson Ware made it a one-run game with a solo home run – his seventh of the year – in the eighth, but it was Mercer's final offensive blow.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"I thought we played well coming off a long break for finals week, but one bad inning hurt us today. We've still got a shot to win this series and hopefully we can play better in Sunday's doubleheader."
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Alex Hanson's third straight multi-hit game translated to two of Mercer's four runs. The junior had a pair of RBIs off two doubles, earning him his first multi-RBI performances since April 15 at VMI.
