Mercer Downs Wofford, Earns Share of SoCon Regular Season Title
5/14/2017 5:39:00 PM | Baseball
Ryan Hagan goes 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs
By: Gerrit Van Genderen
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Alex Hanson singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and Mercer clinched a share of its third consecutive Southern Conference regular season title Sunday with a 7-6 win over Wofford at Russell C. King Field.
Â
Mercer (37-12, 16-4 SoCon) rallied from a 6-4 deficit after opening the game with a four-run advantage through two innings of play. Ryan Hagan went 3-for-4 with a career-high four runs scored and two home runs while Robert Broom tossed five innings of relief to earn the victory.
Â
Hagan came through with a two-out single in the ninth and stole second base before Hanson connected for the game-winning hit. Two innings earlier, Hagan blasted a two-run home run – his second of the game – to left field and knotted the game at six runs apiece.
Â
Mercer scored three in the opening half frame as its first four batters reached base, three via singles. Hagan's leadoff walk was followed by consecutive hits from Hanson, JT Thomas and Danny Edgeworth. Thomas scored on a wild pitch.
Â
Hagan added the Bears' fourth run with a solo shot in the fourth. However, Wofford plated six runs off starter Austin Cox in the third through fifth innings to claim the lead. Cox's day ended after the first two batters of the fifth reached base; Broom replaced him. The sidearm right-hander allowed two inherited runners to score in the inning but was effective the rest of the way, escaping two bases-loaded jams with strikeouts.
Â
The Bears can clinch the outright SoCon regular season title with a win in the series finale Sunday at King Field.
Â
Player of the Game
Two home runs and four runs scored – including the game-winner – will earn you player of the game honors. Ryan Hagan was rock solid at the top of the Bears' lineup, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a walk.
Â
Stat of the Day
Mercer scored seven runs in Sunday's first game after entering the contest with an average of 4.5 runs per game over the last 10 played.
