Madden is only SoCon player to earn the honor after huge start to 2017
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A dominant opening half of the 2017 campaign has landed Mercer senior Charlie Madden on the Midseason Perfect Game/Rawlings All-America Second Team, as announced by the organization's staff Thursday morning.
Â
Madden was named to the Midseason All-America Second Team as a designated hitter and is the only Southern Conference player named to either the first or second teams. He has made 10 of his 31 starts at DH, the other 21 being at catcher.
Â
A two-time SoCon Player of the Week so far this season, Madden is batting a career-best .316 in 114 at bats and ranks second nationally with 13 home runs. His SoCon-leading 35 runs scored, 36 RBIs, 87 total bases and .763 slugging percentage are all top-10 marks nationally as well.
Â
Madden's midseason All-America nod makes it the second straight year a Mercer student-athlete has been named to Perfect Game's list as he joins Kyle Lewis, who was a 2016 Midseason All-America First Team selection.
Â
The Atlanta native has helped Mercer to its best start in program history with a 25-6 (5-1 SoCon) record. Mercer welcomes Samford to OrthoGeorgia Park for a SoCon series this weekend, starting with a 6 p.m. first pitch Friday, April 7. The Friday game will be broadcasted on the American Sports Network (ASN) and radio the flagship station 97.3 FM The Bull Icons and on the iHeartRadio app.
