Stellar pitching leads the way once again for Mercer
MACON, Ga. – Kevin Coulter tossed a season-best 7.2 innings of three-hit ball as Mercer cruised to a Southern Conference series sweep of Samford with a 7-1 win Sunday at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
Mercer (28-6, 8-1 SoCon) won its seventh straight game – six straight in SoCon action – to remain atop the conference standings through three weeks of action. Coulter retired the first eight batters of the game while striking out four and walking only one in his best performance of the season.
Â
Five Mercer runs in the first three innings complimented the right-hander's strong start. Ryan Hagan left the yard for the third time this season with a two-run shot in the second, while Danny Edgeworth and Hunter Bening added RBIs in the three-inning stretch as well. Edgeworth would add a two-run double in the sixth to break the game open for good.
Â
Coulter ended his day with a strikeout before Christian Vann and Robert Broom, who combined to throw the final 1.1 innings, relieved him.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Coulter's performance on the mound was the deciding factor Sunday as he sailed through 7.2 innings of work. A solo home run by Samford's Taylor Garris was the only blemish on an impressive day for the sophomore.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer entered Sunday with 27 wins, tying them with Clemson and Oregon State for the second most wins in the nation. The Bears' 28th win will keep them in the national mix heading into the upcoming week.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"This was one of our best team-efforts all season and we got a lot of contribution from multiple players. It was really good for Kevin [Coulter] to come out there and pitch how he did. He faced some adversity early this season and he's continuing to grow as a pitcher.
Â
"Ryan Hagan is starting to get hot offensively and he's proving to be one of the best shortstops in the country defensively."
