Mercer Snaps Skid, Defeats The Citadel at Home
9/23/2017 9:30:00 PM | Volleyball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer won its first Southern Conference match of the season by defeating The Citadel, 3-1 (25-13, 25-14, 22-25, 25-21) at Hawkins Arena on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-13) |Â It took no time for Mercer to take the lead on an 8-3 run, forcing an early timeout by The Citadel. Another run by the Bears was capped with a kill from Emily Krogman to force the Bulldogs into another timeout. Mercer jumped out to a one-set lead as Danielle Faust closed it out with a kill.
Â
Set 2 (25-14) | After finishing the first set, Faust led off the second set adding another kill for the Bears. Paige Alsten hit .571 with a set-high five kills to help Mercer pull away with a set-clinching 12-4 run to take a 2-0 advantage. Mercer hit .458 as a team through two sets.
Â
Set 3 (22-25) |Â The Bulldogs hung around with a win in set three. Despite pulling within two points late in the set, Mercer could not overcome a four-point run by The Citadel that gave it an 11-7 advantage after Mercer tied it at 7-7.
Â
Set 4 (25-21) |Â Morgan MacGilvary powered the Bears to the match-clinching set win, totaling five kills. Mercer owned a 10-5 lead before The Citadel rallied to tie the set, 13-13. Mercer would claim seven of the next nine points, however, led by kills from Maria Avramova, Krogman, Faust and MacGilvary. The run was enough for Mercer to eventually claim the match.
  Â
NOTABLES
"We wanted to put in a good response after a tough match with Wofford last night. I thought we put in a good response on the floor, especially set one and set two; we were really dictating what type of match it was going to be. In set three, the Bulldogs came at us and played a lot better…we couldn't really pass that test. We took control late into set four but we didn't relinquish control. I'm very proud of our leadership…they did a good job from pregame meal this morning right through to the end of the match by keeping everybody on task."
RECORD UPDATE
Mercer will travel to Greensboro, N.C. and to Cullowhee N.C. to face UNCG and Western Carolina in SoCon play. The first match against UNCG will kick off on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m., followed by Saturday's match against Western Carolina at 6 p.m.
