Mercer Outlast Spartans in SoCon Road Battle

Four Bears tally double-digit kills in five-set win
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Mercer (10-10, 3-6 SoCon) marked its third Southern Conference win over UNCG on Friday evening. The Bears overcame the Spartans 3-2 (25-23, 16-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-10), with their second-straight road win.

Four Bears broke double-digit kills to push the Black and Orange to the conference win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-23) | A quick two Spartan points was the fuel that lit an 8-3 Mercer flame. UNCG responded by recording five-unanswered points, reclaiming the lead 13-11. The Bears trailed for only seven rallies before regaining the front at 19-18 resulting from a Roberta Todd kill. The Spartans tied the set up at 23 only before Alexia Morey connected for a block solo followed by an Emilee Wissmach service ace to secure the 25-23 set win. Â

Set 2 (16-25) | Although Maddie Nunley notched a kill to begin set two, the Spartans jumped to a quick 9-3 lead. Paige Alsten registered three kills bringing the Bears within four points- the smallest margin Mercer trailed by in the entire set. Despite Alexia Morey notching a kill to bring the Bears within nine points, the Bears were unable to stop the Spartans from taking set two 25-16.

Set 3 (24-26) | After five tie-ups to begin set three, Mercer finally took control with a 5-1 run to finally lead 13-9. UNCG generated a 7-3 run to tie the set up at 16, but Alsten and Karle established a kill each to keep the Bears up front. The Spartans tied the score back up at 22, closing out the set 26-24 by outscoring the Bears 4-2.

Set 4 (25-18) | Brittany Major and Todd notched one kill apiece to help Mercer take the early advantage of set four. The Bears were able to extend their lead by as much as eight points (19-11) after Major and Karle both added one kill. Mercer closed out set four 25-18, outscoring the Spartans 4-2. Major recorded five out of her 15 kills in the set.

Set 5 (15-10) | The final set began in Spartan favor, after registering the first two points. Following two quick tie-ups, Mercer was able to steal the lead with the help of a Todd service ace. UNCG added three more ties pushing the Bears to an 8-3 spurt to win the match, which included two kills apiece for Todd and Major as well as one service ace for both Amber Gibson and Wissmach.

NOTABLES
- Mercer recorded 66 kills to UNCG's 62 with a higher attack percentage at .280. The Bears also recorded nine service aces while the Spartans connected for only three.
- The Black and Orange registered a second season-high 80 digs to the Spartans 63 digs, with Roberta Todd recording a career-high and game-high 22 digs. The sophomore also registered a second team-high of 14 kills, three aces and two total blocks.
- Annie Karle, Paige Alsten and Brittany Major notched a match-high 15 kills apiece. Alsten also connected on four total blocks as well as a .500 attack percentage (2 errors, 26 attacks) for a team-high.
- Maddie Nunley recorded a career-high 60 assists. The sophomore also registered 10 digs, two blocks and one kill. The setter notched her seventh double-double of the season with tonight's performance.
- Emilee Wissmach (20), Megan Smith (11) and Amber Gibson (11) reached double-digit kills, totaling 42 for the match.
