Bears drop three-straight sets on road loss
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mercer (8-8, 1-4 SoCon) was defeated in straight sets by Samford, 3-0 (15-25, 20-25, 23-25), on Friday evening at the Pete Hanna Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (15-25) | Mercer was neck-and-neck with the Bulldogs for the first several points, only trailing Samford by one for seven different times. The Bulldogs pulled out a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 18-9 before the Bears sparked three consecutive points including two kills by Paige Alsten and one from Roberta Todd. Samford ended the set by outscoring the Bears 7-3 to take set one, 25-15.

Set 2 (20-25) | Annie Karle notched her third kill for the night to begin the second set. The Bears stole the lead four times with the help of Todd and her back-to-back-to-back kills, putting Mercer up 8-7. The Bulldogs notched six-straight points reclaiming the lead 13-8. Mercer trailed for the remainder of the set, despite three consecutive Bulldog errors pulling the Bears within four points (20-24).

Set 3 (23-25) | Two Bulldog attack errors gave Mercer the early advantage to start the final set. After a Samford 5-0 jump, the Bulldogs regained control. A Todd kill halted the run for a moment, before Samford exerted another 4-0 run to lead the set 12-6. The Bulldogs extended their lead to as much as seven points before Todd served five rallies pulling the Bears within two points (19-21). Despite Mercer scoring the last four out the seven points, the Bears were unable to stop the Bulldogs. Â

NOTABLES
- Mercer recorded four total blocks aces to Samford's three, as well as notched one more kill than the Bulldogs (39 Mercer, 38 Samford). The Bears also registered a higher hitting percentage (.278) than Samford (.271).
- Roberta Todd notched a team-high 12 kills. The sophomore also added three digs and a .480 kill percentage.
- Paige Alsten added a second team-high 10 kills. She has recorded double-digit kills in ten consecutive matches. Alsten only recorded one attack error, giving her a match-high .476.
- Annie Karle led the Bears with three total blocks. The freshman also added six kills and five digs.
- Maddie Nunley totaled match-high 31 assists. The sophomore setter also added two kills and four digs.
