Mercer Rallies, Stuns ETSU for Series Sweep

Bears score seven runs over final two innings to defeat ETSU, 8-4
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – David Posas delivered a go-ahead, bases-clearing triple in the top of the ninth inning as Mercer scored seven runs over the final two innings to defeat ETSU, 8-4, and sweep the weekend series Saturday at Thomas Stadium.
Â
Mercer trailed, 4-3, with two outs in the ninth when Trey Truitt came through with a game-tying RBI single that scored Alex Hanson from second base. Jackson Ware walked in the following at bat to load the bases for Posas, who unloaded the three-run triple into the left-center gap.
Â
The Bears (23-6, 5-1 SoCon) allowed just four hits by ETSU (14-10, 2-4), three of which came in the Bucs' four-run sixth inning. Christian Vann retired the first 11 batters of the game and allowed just one hit in a 5.1-inning start before leaving the game due to tightness in his arm.  Zach Graveno, Nick Spear – who earned the win – and Kevin Coulter combined to limit ETSU to one unearned run on three hits while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings of relief.
Â
Momentum started to shift in the eighth when Mercer scored twice as RJ Yeager scored on a RBI single by Ware and JT Thomas scored on a wild pitch. The two runs cut ETSU's lead to 4-3, setting up the ninth-inning rally.
Â
Mercer's first run came in the opening frame when Hanson scored on a groundout by Yeager. Hanson singled to lead off the game before advancing two bases with a steal and a wild pitch.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
Opening statement:
"We challenged the guys to be great in series finales and got an outstanding mound performance from Christian Vann, followed by solid pitching out of the bullpen," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We got behind, but you can't say enough about our club; this win was a sign of a great club.
Â
"To come into Johnson City and get a sweep is big for us momentum-wise. We had great at bats individually in that ninth-inning rally; David Posas, Alex Hanson, Trey Truitt, Jordan Ammons…all those guys came through with big hits."
Â
Player of the Game
David Posas earned the honor with one swing of the bat as he powered Mercer to a weekend sweep of the Bucs. The redshirt sophomore went 1-for-4, but tallied three RBI on his triple. He also scored an insurance run in the ninth on Jordan Ammons' single.
