Bears Outlast Savannah State for Road Win

Mercer improves to 6-0 against in-state opponents this season
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Mercer withstood a late rally by Savannah State to defeat the Tigers, 8-3, and maintain its perfect record against in-state opponents at Tiger Baseball Field on Tuesday.
Â
The Bears (24-6) won for the 12th time in 13 games and improved to 6-0 against in-state foes with their second victory of the year against Savannah State (5-18). Kevin Coulter allowed just one unearned run on five hits over five innings while the Bears used a four-run seventh inning to escape Savannah with the win.
Â
After the Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to tie it, 3-3, Mercer scored four runs on three hits reclaim its original lead. Jackson Ware led off the pivotal inning with a single and came home from second base on a RBI double by Drew Lingo, who went 3-for-5 as the designated hitter. Lingo would score on a groundout by Cory Wright before RJ Yeager broke it open with a two-run single.
Â
Coulter was backed by five Bears out of the bullpen, including Robert Broom, who earned his sixth win by retiring two Tigers. Broom entered the contest in the bottom of the sixth and stranded Savannah State's potential go-ahead run at third base before Mercer's rally.
Â
Mercer struck first for the 17th time this season with two runs in the second inning after a Savannah state throwing error extended the frame. Lingo, who led off with a single, scored from second on a throwing error by the Tigers' pitcher. Mercer added another two at bats later when Trey Truitt drove home Sean McDermott on a RBI single. The Bears' third run came when Alex Crotty scored on a sacrifice fly by Yeager in the fourth.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
Opening statement:
"We had great starting pitching out of Kevin Coulter tonight; I thought he really took advantage of Savannah State's big ball park," said head coach Craig Gibson. "I'm really proud of how we executed offensively late in the game to put it away with some quality at bats.
Â
"Coulter's performance was followed by some strong pitching out of guys like Ben Brock and Kyle Bialousz as well."
Â
Player of the Game
Despite getting the no-decision, Kevin Coulter had his best outing of the season Tuesday in Savannah. The junior right-hander allowed just one unearned run on five hits as he faced 20 batters over five frames. Coulter added four strikeouts to just one walk.
