Mercer completes two-game season sweep of Georgia Southern
STATESBORO, Ga. – Mercer continued its campaign through the Peach State with a dominant 11-3 win at Georgia Southern on Wednesday at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Â
The Bears (25-6) maintained their perfect record against in-state opponents (7-0) while finishing an undefeated six-game road swing dating back to March 27. The win also sealed Mercer's first season sweep of Georgia Southern (14-15) since 1999.
Â
The Orange and Black established their lead swiftly with consecutive four-run frames in the second and third innings. Mercer tallied eight hits – six by Trey Truitt, Alex Hanson and Jackson Ware – while five Bears recorded at least one RBI over the two-inning span. Two sacrifice flies by Sean McDermott and RJ Yeager as well as a bunt single by Kyle Dockus keyed the second inning. A RBI single by Hanson in the third was bookended by two bases-loaded walks and a hit by pitch from McDermott, Kyle Dockus and Yeager.
Â
Mercer would later score a single run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings on RBI singles by Truitt and David Posas (2-for-3, two RBI) while Dockus plated a run on a fielder's choice.
Â
Zach Graveno helped set the tone by retiring the first seven batters he faced en route to tying a career-long of four innings pitched. The sophomore allowed just one run on two hits while striking out a pair. Four Mercer relievers combined to toss the final five innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out seven Eagles. Sawyer Gipson-Long (3-0) earned the win with one inning out of the bullpen.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
Opening statement:
"This was a great road win for us to cap a six-game stretch away from OrthoGeorgia Park," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We asked our guys to rise to the challenge of playing well away from home and they've certainly done that over the last week.
Â
"Our pitching was outstanding, particularly our starting pitching from Zach Graveno and our defense did a fine job once again. Situationally, we're getting better. We're executing well, which we'll need to continue heading into a tough series against Furman in Macon."
Â
Player of the Game
When reflecting on Trey Truitt's senior season resume, Wednesday's game in Statesboro will likely be a talking point. The Dothan, Ala., native did a bit of everything, tallying a career-high five hits (5-for-6) with three runs, one RBI and two stolen bases. Truitt was a lightning rod for Mercer's offense all night as he led off three innings with hits.
