Bears Fall to Holy Cross in Series Finale

Mercer toss 23 strikeouts, see seven-game streak snapped
MACON, Ga. –  Despite four Mercer pitchers combining to tie a program record of 23 strikeouts, the Bears dropped a 7-3 series finale to Holy Cross at OrthoGeorgia Park on Monday night.
Â
Starting pitcher Kevin Coulter, who was chased after four innings, tallied a career-high 11 strikeouts while Robert Broom (8), Christian Vann (2) and Nick Spear (2) all helped the Bears reach the 23-strikeout mark for the second time in eight games.
Â
On the same day Mercer pounded out 28 hits en route to a record-setting 33-6 win over the Crusaders earlier in the afternoon, the Bears faltered offensively with 11 runners left on base in the nightcap. Holy Cross (2-7) used a pair of pitchers and a six-run fourth inning to escape Macon with a lone victory in the series.
Â
The Bears (10-3) took a 3-1 lead into the fourth inning after Trey Truitt (solo home run), Brandon Michie (RBI double) and Le Bassett (RBI single) tagged Holy Cross starter Declan Cronin for a trio of runs. However, two home runs in the top of the fourth powered the Crusaders' rally.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
Opening statement:
"Holy Cross had a couple pitchers do great work against us tonight, but you can't say enough about our ball club's overall performance in this series," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We probably played 26 good innings over a 24-hour stretch…Holy Cross got six runs in the fourth [inning] today and that was the difference between a sweep and a loss in the series finale.
Â
"We started off Spring Break 2-1 against a good team – a 2017 [NCAA] Regional team – and we'll take that. It's time to regroup and get focused for our four remaining games this week."
Â
Player of the Game
Robert Broom was nearly perfect over three innings of relief, striking out eight Crusaders while allowing only one hit and one walk. The junior lowered his season earned run average to 0.73 in 12.1 innings.
