Mercer surrenders 17 hits to league-leading Spartans in 9-3 loss
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Trey Truitt and Le Bassett both homered as Mercer fell, 9-3, to UNCG on Saturday in a battle of the Southern Conference's top offensive teams at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Â
Mercer (31-16, 10-9 SoCon) could not overcome a 17-hit output by the host Spartans (32-11, 13-3) and opened its fifth straight conference series with a loss. Christian Vann (4-3) took the loss for Mercer after UNCG plated four of its nine runs in his 3.1 innings of work.
Â
The Bears took a short-lived, one-run lead on Brandon Michie's RBI triple in the top of the first inning, but the Spartans quickly tagged Vann with three runs on four hits in the second inning to jump ahead for good. Truitt and Bassett both deposited their 11th home runs of the season in the fourth and sixth innings to keep within striking distance before UNCG plated four runs from the sixth to eighth innings to pull away. The Spartans utilized their expansive ballpark by tallying six extra-base hits, including three triples.
Â
Spartan ace Matt Frisbee improved to 9-0 with 5.2 innings of work on the mound. Mercer used six pitchers, who totaled a combined 12 strikeouts against the Spartans.
Â
Postgame Quotes
Coach Gibson's opening statement:
"Despite jumping out to an early lead in the first inning, we just couldn't hold it against a good ball club [UNCG] tonight," said head coach Craig Gibson. "There's many reasons why those guys have won nearly every weekend series they've played this season.
Â
"I thought we had some pitchers throw well tonight against some quality hitters, but once we got behind, [UNCG] just kept sticking it to us. We'll get a chance tomorrow [Sunday] and Monday to show what we're capable of and try to get back into this series."
