Mercer drops third conference series of the season
GREENSBORO, N.C. – A throwing error on an attempted double play by Mercer in the bottom of the ninth inning sealed a 6-5 loss for the Bears against UNCG in Southern Conference action at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Sunday.
Â
UNCG's Austin Embler scored from second base when Kyle Dockus' throw from the bag sailed wide left of first base and into out-of-play territory. Embler, who was originally on first base, advanced to second base on an infield single to shortstop by Caleb Webster; RJ Yeager attempted to start a double play in the sequence by throwing to Dockus at second base, but Embler beat the throw and triggered the eventual throwing error.
Â
Mercer fell to 31-17 (10-10 SoCon) as the Spartans (33-11, 14-3) clinched the conference series with their second win of the weekend. Sunday's contest started with a three-hour lightning delay; first pitch was moved back to 6 p.m.
Â
The Bears owned a five-run lead heading into the home half of the fourth inning before UNCG roared back with five runs over the fourth and fifth frames en route to eventually claiming the walk-off in the ninth. Mercer tagged UNCG starter Bryce Hensley with eight hits over the first three innings, including five in the first inning that led to a quick three runs. A RBI triple by JT Thomas, followed by a RBI single from Le Bassett in the third had Mercer in business early on.
Â
Mercer starter Austin Cox allowed just two hits while striking out five Spartans through the third, but was pulled before he could make it out of the fifth as UNCG's rally started. With two outs and the tying run on third base in the fifth, Cox was relieved by ace Robert Broom, who allowed a RBI single up the middle to Dillon Stewart that knotted the game, 5-5.
Â
Broom (8-2), despite taking the loss, was effective over the final 3.2 innings; the walk-off run was unearned and he struck out four Spartans while allowing just three hits. Mercer squandered a pair of critical run-scoring opportunities in the fifth and ninth innings. The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth but failed to capitalize as the following three batters went down in order. Later in the ninth, Trey Truitt was tagged out in the third-base line when Mercer's squeeze bunt attempted failed. Truitt led off the inning with a double and reached third base with no outs.

Postgame Quotes
Coach Gibson's opening statement:
"This was a tough one to take the loss in; I thought tonight's game showed why these two teams are the top programs in the conference," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We made a couple mistakes late in the game that we just couldn't overcome. We've got to play smarter and execute when the opportunity is there.
Â
"The thing is, we're right there. We have multiple guys hitting well right now and we're close to playing our best baseball. Tomorrow is a new day that we can turn it around."
