Bears muster one run on eight hits Monday afternoon
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Mercer fell to UNCG, 7-1, in a Southern Conference series finale on Monday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium as the host Spartans claimed the series sweep.
Â
The Bears (31-18, 10-11 SoCon) were swept for the second time in league play this season after generating just one run on eight hits. Chase Burks (5-4) took the loss as he pitched into the fifth inning and allowed four runs on seven hits. Mercer did not provide much run support for Burks and company on the mound; its lone run came on a RBI double by RJ Yeager in the third inning after a dropped fly ball in center field extended the inning.
Â
UNCG (34-11, 15-3) collected 14 hits on the day against four Mercer pitchers. The Spartans scored twice in the home half of the first to set the tone before adding one run in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh frames and two more in the eighth.
Â
Mercer left a pair of baserunners stranded in three different innings; all three times came after the Bears collected two hits in each of the innings. Seven different Bears tallied the eight combined hits on Monday.
Â
Postgame Quotes
Coach Gibson's opening statement:
"This was just a disappointing weekend for us overall as we squandered multiple opportunities to shift momentum into our favor," said head coach Craig Gibson. "Everything went [UNCG's] way this weekend, but when you're 15-3 [in SoCon play], that's how it works.
Â
"We have to tip our caps to UNCG. They did a lot of things well against us. I hope we get to play them again in the [SoCon] Tournament; I like our chances against them next time, but they were better than us this weekend."
