Bears Open SoCon Play with Road Clash at Samford

Mercer looks to upend No. 9 Bulldogs in conference opener
MACON, Ga. – Mercer opens Southern Conference play with a road trip to face No. 9 (Coaches/STATS) Samford at 3 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Seibert Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.

The Bears (1-1) will look to snap an eight-game losing streak against Samford (1-1) that includes a pair of closely-fought road trips to Birmingham in 2014 and 2016; Mercer lost both visits by a combined eight points. Saturday's contest will be broadcasted on ESPN+ while fans can tune into the "Voice of the Bears" Rick Cameron and the Mercer Sports Network on 100.9 The Creek FM or the SportsMic app.

- Mercer's Bobby Lamb earned his 100th career victory against Jacksonville on Sept. 8.
- The Bears have lost eight straight games against Samford dating back to 1937. Mercer's last win came in 1932 (tied in 1934).

- Wide receiver Marquise Irvin is off to a hot start with at least 72 receiving yards in Mercer's first two games. The senior has 10 receptions for 148 yards and one touchdown this season.
- Stephen Houzah caught his first career touchdown reception vs. Jacksonville, a 5-yard score. Houzah is the only active SoCon player with at least one career touchdown catch and one career interception (six career INTs).
- Mitchell (118 yards) and Devezin (101 yards) became Mercer's first teammate combo to both rush for 100 yards in a single game (vs. Jacksonville) since Mitchell did the same with Alex Lakes at Furman on Nov. 14, 2015.
- Mercer allowed its fewest points vs. Jacksonville (3) since shutting out ETSU, 52-0, on Oct. 17, 2015 in Macon.
- Malique Fleming leads Mercer with 17 total tackles (eight solo, nine assisted). He also has one forced fumble.
- Former Mercer inside linebacker Lee Bennett signed a two-year contract with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL) on Sept. 10, making him the first Mercer football alumnus to sign a professional deal.
