Mercer to Clash with The Citadel on Family Weekend

Bears look to continue strong play in Southern Conference action
MACON, Ga. – Mercer will look to build upon a Southern Conference-opening win at Samford last week when it hosts The Citadel for Family Weekend at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Five Star Stadium.

The Bears (2-1, 1-0 SoCon) boast a 23-9 overall record on their home turf since 2013 and are seeking their second straight win over The Citadel (0-2, 0-2 SoCon) after last season's 24-14 victory in Charleston, S.C. Saturday's contest will be broadcasted via ESPN+ while fans can tune into the "Voice of the Bears" Rick Cameron and the Mercer Sports Network on 100.9 The Creek FM or the SportsMic app.

- Mercer is seeking consecutive wins against The Citadel for the first time since 1927-28.
- Mercer has won three straight road games against nationally-ranked FCS opponents, dating back to its 24-14 win at #17 The Citadel on Oct. 7, 2017. (#25 WCU, #9 Samford).
- Prior to defeating The Citadel last season, Mercer had lost three straight games to the Bulldogs by a combined five points.
- Tee Mitchell has rushed for 100-plus yards in each of the last two games. He needs 394 rushing yards to become the program's career leader.
- Robert Riddle is coming off a three-touchdown, 316-yard passing effort in Mercer's road win at #9 Samford last week.
- Mercer won its SoCon-opening game for the first time since joining the league in 2014.
- Marquise Irvin is off to a hot start with at least five catches and 71 yards in each of Mercer's first three games. The senior has 16 receptions for 219 yards and one touchdown this season.
- Stephen Houzah has caught one touchdown pass in each of the last two games, including a 73-yard score at Samford, which is the seventh-longest reception in program history. Houzah is the only active SoCon player with at least one career touchdown catch and one career interception (six career INTs).
- The Bears are 12-for-13 in offensive red zone attempts with 10 touchdowns this season.
- The Bears rank 17th nationally with three fumbles recovered. All three fumbles have been recovered by different players: Michael Freeman, Luke Ward & Eric Jackson.
- Malique Fleming leads Mercer with 20 total tackles (11 solo, nine assisted). He also has one forced fumble.
- Mercer's punt return defense ranks 12th nationally and leads the SoCon with 0.33 yards per return allowed.
