Five-year anniversary of program’s first win in modern era was last week
MACON, Ga. – Mercer University will honor its record-setting 2013 football team at halftime of the Bears' game against Jacksonville at Five Star Stadium on Saturday.
Â
Last Friday, Aug. 31, marked the five-year anniversary of Mercer's first football game following a 72-year hiatus from the gridiron; the Bears defeated Reinhardt University, 40-37, on a last-second field goal at home. Mercer went on to win 10 games that season, setting a NCAA Division I record for most wins by a first-year program.
Â
"Our 2013 team was very special, not only because of what they accomplished on the field, but for each one of them graduating from Mercer University," said head coach Bobby Lamb. "They did something that has never been accomplished in college football, which was winning 10 games in their first season.
Â
"Those young men laid the foundation for something that will be here for a very long time; Mercer Football. I can't say enough about the people they are and what they mean to myself, our coaching staff and our university."
Â
Members of the 2013 team will be in attendance for Saturday's game, which is scheduled to kickoff at 6 p.m. at Five Star Stadium. Mercer (0-1) is coming off of a season-opening road loss at Memphis and will look to earn its first win of the season against the Dolphins (1-0) on Saturday.
