HOW IT HAPPENED (ALABAMA A&M)
Set 1 (22-25) | Set one began in Jacksonville fashion after the Dolphins jumped out to an early 8-3 lead. Paige Alsten recorded a kill to spark a 5-0 run, tying the two teams up at eight. Mercer took its first lead at 16-15 after a Megan Smith ace and two Dolphin attack errors. However, the Bears did not hold on to the lead very long, falling behind 21-20 following an attacking error by Danielle Faust. After Roberta Todd evened the match at 21, the Dolphins rattled off four of the final five points to claim the first set, 25-22.
Â
Set 2 (25-19) | The next three sets were in Mercer favor, with the Bears taking a 13-5 advantage to start the second set including three-straight Todd kills. The Dolphins responded with a 5-1 run of their own to close the gap at 14-10. The Bears held Jacksonville at bay, stretching their lead back to 18-11 following consecutive kills by Brittany Major and Faust. Mercer closed out the set with three consecutive points, including a Molly Hackett service ace to take the second set 25-19 and tying the match at one.
Â
Set 3 (25-18) | Even though Jacksonville registered the first point, it would be the Bears who came out hot to start the set with five unanswered points ending with a Danielle Faust kill. The Dolphins were unable to overcome the early deficit, despite trimming the Mercer advantage to just one. The Bears notched seven kills out of the team's eleven points, including two kills apiece by Morey and Todd. Morey sparked the Bears with three consecutive solo blocks to keep the Dolphins in check for the remainder of the set.
Â
Set 4 (25-23) | The final set started in Jacksonville favor, taking the early lead at 7-3. A 4-0 run led by Alsten and Todd brought the Bears back to tie the match at seven. The Dolphins reclaimed the lead and held on to the advantage until the Bears scored three unanswered points to even the set at 18 apiece.
