Former Mercer hurler entering his eighth major league season
MACON, Ga. – Former Mercer right-handed pitcher Cory Gearrin signed a one-year big league contract with the Seattle Mariners, according to multiple Major League reports on Thursday.
Â
Gearrin pitched for the San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics last season, making a total of 62 appearances while posting a 2-1 record and 3.77 earned run average in 57.1 innings pitched. He struck out 53 batters and walked 21.
Â
The right-hander is entering his eighth season at the major league level; Gearrin has tossed 246.2 innings over 270 appearances in his career and owns a 3.54 ERA with 235 strikeouts. Seattle will be the fifth major league organization that Gearrin has played for since 2011.
Â
Gearrin left Mercer after being selected by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round of the 2007 MLB Draft. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native recorded a 2.44 ERA and 13 saves at Mercer that spring, both of which still rank in the top-10 in Mercer single-season history.
Â
Gearrin is one of 10 former Mercer baseball players who are expected to report to spring training for the upcoming 2019 major league and minor league seasons. For more info on Mercer's #ProBears, click here.
