Mercer defeats Wofford, 3-0, in SoCon Quarterfinals

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer advanced to the Southern Conference Tournament Semifinals with a 3-0 win over Wofford on Friday afternoon in the SoCon Quarterfinals. The shutout victory for Mercer was its fifth of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer wasted little time getting the offense going. Dylan Gaither had a shot that was saved and Dawson Gideon had a shot go high in the first five minutes of the game. Just under six minutes later, the Bears took the lead. Leo Toledo Jr. sent a cross into the box and Trevor Martineau scored on a header putting Mercer ahead, 1-0. The game remained 1-0 until late in the first half. Michael Ille put Mercer ahead, 2-0, with four seconds left in the half when he took a shot 15 yards outside the box, that went in.

Two and a half minutes into the second half, the Bears extended the lead to 3-0. Martineau sent a through ball into the box and Gaither beat the keeper 1v1 extending the Bears lead. The Bears kept the pressure on but could not score again and JR DeRose recorded five second-half saves to earn the shutout. Mercer defeated the Terriers, 3-0.

The Bears defeated the Terriers, 3-0, on Friday. During the 2017 season, the Bears opened the SoCon Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Wofford. During the 2017 season, the Bears won the Socon Championship.
JR DeRose recorded his fifth shutout of the season in the win over Wofford. It was the first shutout for the Bears since Oct. 31 when they defeated Belmont, 2-0.
The Bears take on Furman on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.

UP NEXT
The Bears will be back in action Sunday, Nov. 10 when they play in the Southern Conference Semifinals. Mercer will take on top seed Furman at 1 p.m. from Greenville, S.C.
