Betts Stadium has become one of the most recognizable athletic venues on Mercer University’s campus in Macon, Georgia. Serving as the home of the Mercer Bears men’s and women’s soccer programs, the facility reflects both the university’s commitment to athletic excellence and its dedication to creating an attractive, fan-friendly environment for student-athletes and supporters.
The origins of Betts Stadium trace back to its days as Bear Field, a modest soccer venue that provided a home for Mercer’s growing soccer programs. As Mercer continued expanding its NCAA Division I athletic profile, university leaders recognized the need to improve the facility and provide a playing surface and game-day atmosphere that matched the aspirations of the program. In 2009, the venue underwent a significant renovation project valued at approximately $250,000. During that renovation, the field was resurfaced and regraded to create a more level playing surface, and new grass was installed to enhance both the quality of play and the appearance of the facility.
Over the next decade, Mercer soccer continued to grow in competitiveness and visibility within the Southern Conference. As a result, the university invested further in the facility. Prior to the 2019 season, the stadium received a dramatic transformation that elevated it from a traditional soccer field into one of the premier collegiate soccer venues in the region. Renovations included the construction of a new press box building, installation of a modern scoreboard, upgraded team bench areas, enhancements to concessions and restroom facilities, improved fencing and protective netting, turf walkways, landscaped entryways, and extensive hardscaping around the venue.
Following these improvements, the facility was renamed Betts Stadium. The renovated complex blended Mercer’s historic character with a modern athletic experience. One of its defining features is the historic wrought-iron gate entrance, which connects the venue to the university’s architectural heritage while creating a distinctive sense of place for visitors and fans. The result is a stadium that feels both traditional and contemporary, celebrating Mercer’s past while supporting its future athletic ambitions.
Today, Betts Stadium seats nearly 500 spectators and features a fully enclosed, lighted playing surface that allows for evening matches and an enhanced fan experience. Located near Mercer’s medical and engineering schools, the stadium occupies a central position on campus and serves as an important link between athletics and the broader university community. Its intimate setting places fans close to the action, creating an energetic atmosphere during Southern Conference competition and postseason events.
Beyond hosting regular-season soccer matches, Betts Stadium has become a showcase facility for Mercer Athletics.
